Averages can be misleading. People usually expect average to be evenly distributed all over the sample but in truth instead of even distribution there is rather a tendency for small clusters and huge gaps to make up for it. This app is trying to demonstrate exactly that.

In the upper left corner there is a block with a table of tiles. Amount of columns in the table can be adjusted with the + and - Button in the top right corner.

Highlight Button - will randomly highlight tiles in the table. Chance of any tile to be lit up is linked with the amount of columns in the table. So if there are 12 columns chances of any tile to be lit up is 1 in 12. If there are 20 columns, the chance of any tile to light up is 1 in 20 etc.

This way, on average, there should be allways 1 tile lit up on every line. And as there are 10 lines, on average there should be 10 tiles lit up in a block.

The table of statistics at the bottom on the left is storing how many samples of the current table of tiles have been taken, how many highlights were found in total, and what is the average amount of highlighted tiles per sample.

Sample Button - will quickly click the highlight button 1000 times, gathering a large sample of data quickly.
